There is another shoe, single this time, outside the medical centre. Alone, on the small ledge below the big window that looks up Lackey Street towards the railway station, round the corner from the entrance. A woman's shoe, high-heeled, a bit clunky, in brown suede with small diamante inlays picking out a pattern around the instep and along the toe. Italian, perhaps. When I first saw it, the other day, it was standing upright but now it's fallen over. The heel, which is thick as well as high, makes it unlikely that whoever left it there could have walked away on the other one. Or only with a most peculiar gait. Hopping. Or on crutches. It does not look much worn and yet its dancing days are surely over.

I see things like this -on Mt Wellington (Maungarei) we saw a shoe on a post - took a photo - this could be prose poem - great the way you mix "reality" and the near surreal...

Certainly some great writing on here.

I've always held the belief that sighted single shoes are left behind by aliens; & that left or right, formal or flipflop, etc. etc. indicates the particular alien race......

Lol - aliens - my son is fascinated by them... the idea of them...

... soon as they painted out the alien on the wall of the medical centre .. the shoes started to arrive ...

as human we are fascinated by the "unknown" and the possibility of "aliens" - I loved Carl Sagans programme on the subject... he combined philosophy and science so well... like Bronowski and Oliver Sachs is another I like.

Hey! Richard von Sturmer does the brilliant "haiku-like" magic observations in poet land!!

Here is a story - as you know he is not tall!! (Tallness is over valued in any case) He went to Waiheke with my daughter - who is a friend of his - and they saw the hut where a very very tall man lived - Richard was very interested in this place!!
